The Dachshund

Characteristics:

Dachshunds come in two sizes namely Standard (between 9kg and 12kg) and Miniatures (less than 5.5kg). Their life span is between 10-14 years.

They come in three coat tipes:

Smooth Haired
Long Haired
Wire Haired

You get the following colors: Red, Cream, Black and tan, Chocolate and tan and Black and Cream
The Dachshunds have the following patterns: Chocolate Dapple, Silver Dapple and Brindle.

Double Dapples are not recognise by KUSA. You don’t breed Dapple on Dapple because you may have puppies that are born blind or with hearing problems.

Eyes:

You can get blue eyes but only with Dapples. They might have blue eyes when their eyes opened at 2 weeks time and if the blue eyes are still there at 8 weeks then it is possible that they will keep it. You also might get one blue eye and green or brown. Normally they will have green eyes or brown eyes.

Temperament:

Dachshunds are known to be loyal to their owners. They are very playful and make an excellent family dog. Because of their size they adapt very good in the house or flat and they travel well.
They are very good watch dogs and will alert you of any sound or movement that is out of place.
